Architects conceive the overall aesthetic of buildings, but their work goes far beyond the simple appearance. They involve themselves with the functionality, safety and energy use of structures to meet the needs of those that use them.

The preparation of an architect’s plan requires knowledge of and compliance with zoning laws, state and local level building codes, fire regulations, mobility requirements, and other ordinances.

Architects prepare their plans using BIM and CADD: Building Information Modeling and Computer-aided Design and Drafting. These methods have all but eliminated the use of pen and paper in construction drawings. Also, architects do not work in isolation. They are required to coordinate their efforts closely with urban planners, engineers, landscape architects and interior designers, and many of the other professionals that are involved in bringing the project to completion.
