California College of the Arts

The Fashion Design Program is a course of study that emphasizes both design concepts and skill development in an environment that feeds on ideas. The intentions of the program is to promote originality and creativity in students, all while giving them the independence to explore disciplines and bring forth designs in tune with modern art and culture.

We provide the visual and verbal communication skills necessary for success, as well as instruction in the technical aspects of design including pattern making, sewing, draping, and fashion illustration.

Students develop creative solutions to the challenges of sustainability by designing and manufacturing fashions that respect the environment and preserve native cultures. Using their skills to express themselves, seniors build collections and portfolios, and participate in a spring fashion show, which signifies the end of the program.

The Boyce Fashion Design Studio in San Francisco is set up for cutting, draping, sewing, and knitting. Our production labs are equipped with sewing and knitting machines, dress forms, cutting tables, and studio space for our senior students. The Textiles Program offers courses that interests students, and also includes equipment for spinning, printing, weaving, and dyeing.

There are many programs available to the Fashion Design students: scholarship and award programs, design initiatives, and internships; and they often place in design competitions as national finalists. Graduates work in every area of the fashion industry for businesses like BCBG, Ellen Tracy, Gap Inc., Gymboree, Levi Strauss & Co., Ralph Lauren, and even their own companies.
