The fashion industry has a lot of different careers to offer using a variety of skills. Someone trying to describe the fashion industry may use such terms as hectic - high-energy - fast-paced - exciting - fun - profitable. For a person to completely understand fashion, they must study history, psychology, sociology and art. Technological breakthroughs, changes in investment patterns, change in consumer attitudes, world events and other economic forces affect fashion, which is also a business.
In fact, the fashion business employs more than most any other industry. The apparel industry of California is one of the biggest success stories. Although a lot of people don't realize it, the fashion industry plays a major part in the state's economy. Second to New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles are the largest centers for apparel manufacturing in the country.
Found in Los Angeles, the 3 million square foot California Mart is the biggest textile mass market that can be found on the globe. Students enrolled in the Fashion Design certificate program will gain the skills required for many careers within the fashion industry. Students are supposed to complete all 19 units of core courses with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher for 55 units. This is required to get the certificate. Students must complete a minimum of 12 units of the 55 units at Long Beach City College.
In order to receive a Fashion Merchandising Certificate, students must have a minimum "C" average for the 18.5 units of core courses and a 2.5 GPA for the remaining 45 units. Students must complete at least 12 of those mentioned units at Long Beach City College.
