Fashion Institute of Technology
Of all the professional design schools, FIT alone has concentrated solely on fashion since it opened in 1944. There have been dramatic changes to fashion since 1944, and FIT has adapted to the current times. The variety of course offerings, unique areas of specialization and state of the art facilities that Fashion Design majors find here reflect the sophistication and diversity of the industry.
Associate of Fashion Design Degree Program:
The Fashion Design Associates degree program at FIT offers basics, academic study, and hands-on teaching. By taking advantage of our program, you will learn by action.
The curriculum includes a broad range of liberal arts classes and classes pertaining to all parts of fashion design. The majority of students earn their AAS degree in Fashion design in two years. Some students are allowed to take a special one-year program, though, provided that they pass specific liberal arts requirements. If students desire to further their academic education after obtaining an AAS degree, a number of FIT's baccalaureate programs are available, as well as the BFA in Fashion Design.
Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Program:
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program uses two years of the course in Fashion Design for students to get to know the subtle intricacies of modern fashion through total involvement. The creation and development of knitwear is the focus of the fifth term allowing students to specialize in knitwear, intimate apparel, childrenswear or general fashion design in their sixth semester.
Business aspects of the fashion industry include merchandising, apparel production, and manufacturing. It is required that students take courses in all three. Students concentrate on portfolio development during their last semester and may complete internships with such companies as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, and that is just to name a few. You can also work with professional mentors on independent projects, like designing a complete clothing line.
