Nassau Community College

The opportunity is given in the field of fashion design, for qualified students to complete the Associate in Applied Science degree. By means of techniques and equipment as per industry standards, draping, sketching, pattern making and garment construction are of focus. Utilizing hands-on methods, students will learn the skills they'll need to take their original sketches and develop them into finished garments. Students are asked to take part in both community and industry-sponsored events along with the classwork.

Students are advantaged in that they are able to produce a fashion show, showcasing the fourth semester students' lines and the term garments of the first-year students, during the spring semester.

An internship program in a design studio is a required component of the program. Upon completion of the course of study, graduates may continue on to a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Bachelor of Science; credit is transferable to most four-year colleges.

This area of study is both creative and technical and requires that applicants submit a portfolio of their artwork. Students will be advised of the guidelines for this informal portfolio interview in a letter that will request a scheduled appointment for review of their portfolio.

Fashion Buying & Merchandising (A.A.S.):

Students will take a variety of applied fashion merchandising classes.

The specialized courses:

  • Fashion Advertising and Promotion
  • Introduction to Menswear
  • Fashion Apparel
  • Introduction to Import Buying
  • Fashion and Home Accessories
  • Fashion Coordination
  • Publicity
  • Interior Design

A student's core education is comprised of the study of textiles, creation and analysis of visual merchandising, retail purchasing strategies, and retailing techniques. For students who want to gain additional experience, there will be a chance to take part in a Cooperative Work Experience Program.

Once the student completes the program, students will be qualified to seek positions with fashion manufacturers, designers' showrooms, resident buying offices, retail stores, fashion publications, and other firms within the fashion industry.
