The Fashion Merchandising program prepares people for careers in the ever-changing fashion merchandising industry. If a practical and extremely competitive career is what you are looking for, then the challenging and dynamic world of fashion may present you with the challenges that you have been seeking. People who are successful in the fashion business have a taste for fashion and business inclusive. The focus of the coursework in the Fashion Merchandising program at IUP includes:

  • Production and distribution of apparel
  • How to merchandise and promote apparel
  • Textiles and textile testing
  • Ready-to-wear apparel
  • Quality control
  • Historic costume design and related textiles
  • Visual appeal and merchandising
  • Multi-cultural textiles and apparel
  • Application of color
  • Apparel design and construction

By providing study in these three options: Business Administration, Marketing, and Small business Management, the Eberly College of Business complements the Fashion Merchandising major. The course puts special focus on acquiring computer literacy and mathematical skills. The cooperation between IUP and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City has created a program, which permits students in their final year to study:

  • Fashion/accessories design
  • Manufacturing management
  • Advertising design
  • Advertising and communications
  • Textile/surface design
  • Textile development
  • Marketing

Program in Fashion Merchandising is a core course in the Department of Human Development and Environmental Studies within the environment of the College of Health and Human Services. The department reaches their goal, which is to empower students to perform effectively in the highly technical and diverse global market. University liberal studies requirements, apparel and textile core courses and electives, and a specific business concentration is being covered in the Fashion Merchandising curriculum. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Design is awarded to all students successfully graduating from the program.

The internship experience is useful to many students as it helps them apply the theoretical concepts they learn in class. Internships have been made available all over Pennsylvania, as well as other surrounding states.
