Moore College of Art and Design

The blending of the best art and design training, with the practical demands of working in any number of fashion related fields, is acquired in Moore's acclaimed Fashion Design Department. Combining both classroom time and hands on projects, the curriculum covers several topics:

  • Illustration
  • Pattern making
  • Sewing
  • Creating storyboards
  • Designing original collections
  • Fashions show production
  • Career preparation

Accomplished designers teach the students from their own experiences. Also, their wide network of acclaimed fashion designers, industry professionals, and many of Moore's successful fashion alumnae give students a valuable source of critiques and valuable internship opportunities. The department gains a lot from its visibility, locally and nationally and maintains an impressive record of top prizes in many design competitions.

The appreciation of students for the creative and business sides of the industry is developed through regular interaction with the fashion world of Philadelphia and nearby New York City. Students of the class make visits to studios and showrooms of the Designers, Retailers, and Suppliers to learn first hand from experts about competition, fabric buying, display, production, and business practices.

Moore's Fashion Design program is one of the most distinguished in the nation for it's comprehensive program. Moore graduates are presenting themselves in every area from fashion to home furnishings and fine art. This program supports the use of technology, as well as traditional hand processes. Professional artists and the faculty of established textile designers emphasize development of aesthetic and conceptual concerns and high proficiency in design industry techniques. Students will explore many areas of textile design and construction including fibers, coloring and dyeing methods, and mechanical design.

Second, third, and fourth year students put emphasis on accumulating strong technical skills. A variety of possible internships are available for the third and fourth year students, where they may gain invaluable experience.

Upon the final year, the student should decide on their specialty, from:

  • Print
  • Woven
  • Knit
  • Surface design

When choosing a concentration, seniors have the opportunity to develop either a professional portfolio for an industrial art career or for a selection of work in the fine arts.
