El Centro College
Apparel and Fashion Design
Apparel designers transform clothing designs into industrial patterns on paper so that they can be manufactured in bulk. Unique ideas will be needed each season to be able to creatively keep up with the latest trends with designs that sell.
Once the program has been successfully completed, the student will have the opportunity to enter the women's wear or children's wear manufacturing industry as an assistant in a design department. A core curriculum of the study related to the fashion industry is provided to a Fashion design freshman student. The core courses in basic fashion and general education allow the students to choose the Pattern Design or Apparel Design specialty in their second year. Two specialties, Apparel Design or Pattern Design, are available choices for the students once they have completed the 35-semester hour core.
Pattern and Fashion Design
An original garment or fashion sketch is converted into the industrial paper pattern used in the mass production of clothing by pattern designers. The skill of preparing a flat pattern with precise measurements is known as drafting. Developing a pattern for a garment by putting fabric on a dress form is called draping.
The student enters a women's wear or children's wear manufacturer, as an assistant in the pattern department, upon the completion of the program.
Theoretical Costume and Fashion Design
Students are made ready for entry-level employment in a theatrical costume workshop via the Theatrical Costume Design Certificate Program.
