The course offering in this program has been carefully tailored to prepare students with all the experience necessary for immediate employment in the garment industry. These courses are geared around the technical aspects of apparel manufacturing; for instance, ready-to-wear and custom construction techniques, several different approaches to production patternmaking, and pattern grading. Courses in computers, design, color and textiles, alterations, and contemporary tailoring are also a part of the program.

In order for a student to complete the program, eight credits of supervised work experience in the industry are necessary. Faculty approval is necessary to apply for a single course.

A student who satisfies the requirements for this program will have the necessary skills to join entry-level positions such as:

Upon completion of the program, the student will be awarded a certificate (AAS-T) (Certificate) and hold the following abilites:

  • Design: Appreciate the principles of design and proportion as applied to garments and presentation materials.
  • Communication: Work efficiently as an individual as well as cooperate with peers in a team environment. Can think and solve problems instantly in most all situations.
  • Computer Literacy: Express confidence with computers, and be able to understand and use computer applications for story boards and other presentation material, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Construction: Be capable of utilizing industrial machinery to create different kinds of clothing in various ways.
  • Pattern Development: Comprehend principles of different pattern approaches that include drafting, flat pattern, draping, and pattern grading.
  • Development of Garment Specifications: Display a clear comprehension of specification sheets, markers, sequences of construction, and technical drawings in addition to creating accurate specification packages.
  • Textile Design and Development: Developed an understanding of, and be able to identify various fabric types and weave structures.
  • Line Development: Gained practical knowledge of the design and development of textiles for apparel manufacturing.
  • Portfolio/Resume/Presentation: Students will have developed a portfolio, resume and story boards to professional standards for presentation.
