What is the Job Outlook for Fashion Design?

Fashion design is an industry with a long history. Its growth has remained steady over the years, and the job outlook is good for the future. Styles change with the seasons so there is always a demand for new designs and designers to create or copy them.

Fashion designers have several different job options to choose from, which further helps the job outlook to be bright for the future. Not everyone can be a designer to the stars but there are other choices to be made. For instance, fashion designers tend to specialize in particular styles of garments or accessories. Fashion design school graduates may choose to enter the workforce as a fashion handbag design assistant, or they may choose to specialize in sweaters or shoes. Not everyone will elect to design clothing.

Those who do choose to design clothing may specialize in a particular style of clothing such as baby clothes, work clothes, or theater costumes. There are an almost endless number of specializations a fashion designer may choose from. Some fashion designers opt to go into business for themselves and need to be particularly savvy because they must grow and manage a business in a competitive market.

Not all jobs in fashion design are glamorous, especially to those starting out as an assistant. An assistant's days may be filled with cutting out patterns and sewing garments in an assembly line manner. Assistants are expected to sew quickly, without error. Many fashion designers begin their careers as assistants and work their way up over the years.

Fashion shows provide another job option for fashion designers as they are responsible for the planning and execution of these events. Fashion design schools often offer courses in event planning and fashion show production to prepare graduates for these responsibilities. In addition to organizing and hosting the event, the designer is also responsible for the marketing and promotion that goes along with it.

Fashion journalism is another fascinating career option for fashion designers. This will require additional training in journalism which might be provided by a fashion design school in bachelor's level or master's level courses. If not, electives in journalism or a dual major might be considered. This job entails reporting on fashion trends and news in newspapers, magazines, and on the web.

Because the job options are so diverse and because new fashions come in style each season, the job outlook for fashion design is good. Job growth has remained steady which means job security for those already in the workforce. New grads from fashion design school face strong competition for new jobs and it may be difficult to find a dream job right away. Most new graduates start out as assistants and do more labor than conceptualizing for the first few years of their career. Creativity, determination, and a solid education are important for career advancement.

The job outlook for fashion design is good for those who create a good portfolio and obtain a degree from an accredited school. Although most start out as assistants, with a few years experience, doors will begin to open up and the climb up the career ladder will begin with a promotion to head designer along with a pay raise.
