Where Do Fashion Designers Work?

Fashion designers create the look, pattern, and overall style of the things we wear. Without a keen eye for style and knowledge of how to cut clothing to make a perfect fit, fashion wouldn't be the high grossing industry it is today. For people looking into a career in fashion design, the windows of available opportunity and career potential are intriguing.

A good number of fashion designers begin working in the design by running their own businesses. Being self-employed has its perks, but it can take a very long time to get established and recognized in the fashion world--a place where designers must make a name for themselves. It's a highly competitive industry, and the demand for new design is never ending. True grit and real passion for the best designs possible are a must if fashion designers want to start their own line and get distributed.

Usually, many years of hard work is required to become well known, and it can be quite costly. Without the proper investment of both time and money, it can be very difficult for fashion designers to branch out on their own successfully, and many end up partnering with one of more designers to make it work.

Aside from having a personal line of clothing, shoes, or other items, fashion designers can also become an integral part of couture design houses. Famous names such as Kenneth Cole, Prada, Gucci, or Marc Jacobs often look for talented designers to assist with the production and concept of new clothing or accessories. Fashion designers help to determine the silhouette, fabric and materials used, as well as colors, patterns, and overall fit of clothing and accessories. With their help, large names in the business can produce more items to offer customers for their seasonal lines.

Competition is intense in the world of fashion design. Since it's very difficult for most designers to become famous, another career option is to assist the fashion design department of larger retailers such as JC Penney, Target, or other bigger stores. The job is often behind the scenes work, but for those with a real passion for design, the reward is in seeing their finished work on store shelves, whether they get credit for it or not. Even smaller retailers offer positions in window and floor display design, which may interest designers who live in less-populated cities and suburban areas. Manufacturing sectors also enlist the help of fashion designers, and use them for procurement of wholesale fabrics or other items.

Since this fascinating niche is so specific, most people need a degree specifically in fashion design. By developing an outstanding portfolio, and perhaps even creating a base of clientele, fashion designers can get a leg up in the industry, which can mean more exposure. Some designers create fashion for friends and family in order to build their portfolio and add references to their resume. Whether it's the creation of the luxurious or the practical, fashion designers have many options when it comes to choosing their career path.
