Pratt Institute

The Communications Design program at Pratt Institute prepares students to move into professional careers as illustrators, graphic designers, or advertising art directors. All three are defined as professions where image and word come together to transmit ideas or information. An underlying belief at Pratt is that the most important trait of Communication Design is the ability to communicate a message through visual art whether the medium is a package design, a television ad, a web page, or a corporate logo.

Therefore at Pratt Institute, the creative areas of illustration, graphic design, and advertising art direction are not isolated from each other. Students are educated in the design fundamentals shared by all three. Following their second year, students can choose to focus their studio practice on one of the three areas.

Pratt design students are also required to complete courses such as fundamentals of human institutions and history of design. Students can also take a range of electives in programs throughout the school.

Pratt students in the Communication Design have the opportunity to apply their classroom and studio training to professional design work through internships in local publishing houses, design firms, and advertising agencies.

Graduates of the Communication Design program at Pratt Institute are fully prepared to take on the challenges of the changing job market. Because of the unique focus on the three distinct areas of illustration, graphic design, and advertising art direction, graduates have more flexibility in their job choices and career paths.
