School of the Visual Arts SVA

The goal of the Graphic Design Program at New York City's School of Visual Arts is to teach designers who hope to become professional artists. SVA's distinguished teaching staff is made up of 100-plus working professionals who are well-recognized in their fields.

One of the most competitive graphic design programs in the country, SVA is committed to developing graphic designers who possess personal visual vocabularies grounded in design principles and able to apply concise, conceptual thought to resolve problems of design.

Students are required to gain a strong comprehension of the fundamentals of art and design including issues of perspective, color, texture, symmetry, balance, contrast, pattern, and line. To this foundation, typography skills are added.

Using the latest techniques and software in our cutting edge editing facilities, student at SVA can pursue digital video, an area that allows designers to add movement and sound to their visual messages. Students can also choose to focus on 3D graphic design, using the fundamental skills of woodworking and welding.

Regardless of the focus, all SVA design students are taught to think, to resolve problems, and to meet not only their client's communicative needs, but their own creative dreams.
