The Johns Hopkins University opened with Daniel Coit Gilman, as the very first president who was inaugurated on February 22, 1876. When presenting his installation address, Gilman asked, "What are we aiming at? . The encouragement of research . and the advancement of individual scholars, who by their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue, and the society where they dwell."
Gilman was able to create something completely new for the United States by starting from scratch rather than simply taking over an institution already in existence. He established a research university through research and scholarship, and it was dedicated not just to advance students' knowledge, but also to advance the state of human knowledge in general.
