East Carolina University
Students in East Carolina University's School of Art and Design (SoAD) are mindful of the effect that graphic designers have on the world and learn to communicate ideas and concepts using typography, word and image, space and positioning, and color. The SoAD program has been in place for over 30 years and has been acclaimed as one of the finest design programs in the Southeast. National journals and annuals produced by AIGA, Type Directors Club and the American Center for Design have featured work by faculty members and graduates, and students have received both regional and national scholarships.
A foundations year gives graphic design students a thorough understanding of the concepts fundamental to all visual media and the opportunity to work with students who will go on to major in other areas such as art history, painting, textile or wood design. One of the SoAD objectives is to foster a multidisciplinary environment so that students have broader, richer experiences.
Graphic design students combine critical thinking skills with computer technology while becoming aesthetically and culturally sensitive. A comprehensive curriculum emphasizes the ability to manage image, typography and visual systems to communicate effectively and appropriately. Classroom critiques encourage useful dialogue and are an integral component in the learning process. As students progress through the course of study, they will produce and refine their portfolios. In addition to undergraduate degrees, ECU offers post-graduate studies and a small, personalized MFA program.
