Georgia State University

Arts education at Georgia State University is committed to challenging, provoking, and training students to become thoughtful, critically aware artists and designers. This is accomplished through an expansive offering of visual arts courses, full access to the rich resources of the university, and the support and critique of a faculty of accomplished artists and educators. Administered through the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design, GSU offers a variety of degree programs including both a BFA and an MFA in Graphic Design.

The graphic design curriculum at Georgia State University combines theoretical, methodological, and practical design approaches in order to stimulate both individual development and focused research. The program takes into account the new technologies that are redefining the field of graphic design.

Undergraduates progress through a sequence of courses that begin with graphic design basics including:

  • history of design
  • typography
  • imagery
  • semiotics
  • and computer design

Upper-level courses offer focused study in:

  • publication design
  • packaging
  • exhibit design
  • corporate identity systems
  • interactive design
  • and design for film and television

The master's program offers students the opportunity to further their skills through focused practice and investigation.

Before graduating, graphic design students gain professional experience through internships in design environments locally, nationally, and abroad. In addition, students broaden their knowledge through a roster of on- and off-campus exhibits, workshops, and lectures.
