San Francisco Art Institute
The Design+Technology curriculum at San Francisco Art Institute pushes students to make their own conceptual contributions to the global advertising, entertainment, fashion and gaming industries. Students question how design functions in and acts as a reflection of today’s changing social landscape.
Students challenge intellectual boundaries between art and design through a variety of courses such as Digital Literacy: Image, Internet, Presentation; History of Reproducibility; Designing a New Skin: Reshaping the Human Form; and Activating Objects. These courses, among others, explore the ways in which artists and designers work together to create everyday life. Courses in typography, motion graphics, experimental video, network art and narrative film help students contribute to the dialogue.
For those who desire a more technical focus, the technology track lets students design and shape technology in both individual and collaborative projects. This track hones technical skills through courses in animation, compositing, digital audio, video, photography and illustration. Digital Sound Objects; Electricity and Electronics for Artists; and 3D Modeling, Texturing, and Animation are a sampling of typical courses offered in this track.
At the SFAI Centers for Interdisciplinary Study, practice and research overlap with everyday life, allowing Design+Technology students to forge connections with the Centers. As an example, students involved with the Center for Art+Science and the Center for Media Culture collaborate on design and technology projects in the Exploratorium, an art and science museum. Because the San Francisco Bay Area is the heart of technology research and development, Design+Technology students have ample access to independent study and internships that further shape their design education.
