The Department of Art and Design at the University of Minnesota-Duluth School of Fine Arts understands the interdisciplinary nature of the graphic design profession and with that in mind, gives graphic design students the opportunity to experience all the arts in a way that few universities can. Students develop a vision and master the necessary skills to become successful visual communicators.Graduates go on to have success in numerous professional contexts.

The BFA in graphic design is comprised of liberal arts education requirements, a writing course, and a minimum 2.50 GPA. In addition to the BFA, an MFA with a concentration in graphic design is offered and can be completed over the course of three years (part-time or full-time). Students delve into their individual artistic, educational and professional talents, going beyond traditional boundaries in their study of new media, motion graphics, sound art, typographic design, design theory, book arts, design in the public realm, experience design, and training for university-level instruction. Students divide their time between academic study and work in the studio and are guided by a group of international faculty members renowned for their work and experience in the fields of art and design.

Graphic designs students must submit a portfolio for review in order to enter the pogrom. Selected students may be admitted to an honors track that culminates in a senior year exhibition, presentation or project.
