Academy of Art University
The objective of the School of Interior Architecture & Design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco is to train each student for a fulfilling career in interior architecture and design, whether it be in the residential or commercial sector. Academy of Art students study ergonomics, furniture design, how computers inform architecture, and the roles played by color and lighting. Coursework emphasizes the development of multiple skills, since being a successful interior designer requires a photographer's eye, an illustrator's skills, a fashion designer's sense of style, and an artist's soul, combined with computer and graphic design skills. Instructors are design professionals, and each course strikes a balance between design knowledge and theory and creativity. MFA students receive thorough preparation for professional practice through coursework that matches theory, design and technology to industry standards. As a final project, students redesign the function and interior of a selected site, keeping in mind spatial issues, innovative design and a focus on detail. The project culminates in a professional presentation and review by committee.
