Columbia College Chicago's Art and Design Department highlights the importance of aesthetic maturation alongside the development of technical skills and discipline. To that end, Columbia College Chicago offers a BFA in Interior Architecture for creative, career-focused students. The fundamentals of the curriculum, directed almost entirely towards commercial design, lie in a thorough understanding of the history of art and design, developing competence in artistic expression and appreciating the realities of a highly-competitive industry. Columbia graduates are not only creative thinkers and producers, but also entrepreneurs and leaders. They learn how to produce a three-dimensional answer to the client and environmental needs through a compete study of building materials, space manipulation, furniture and finishes. These studies are complemented by an emphasis on developing verbal, graphic, and written communication skills. Seniors can exhibit their portfolios at the annual Manifest event, and students who wish to study abroad can do so at Columbia Arts - Florence in northern Italy. The Council for Interior Design Accreditation has recognized Columbia College Chicago's undergraduate Interior Architecture program.
