Southern Illinois University-Carbondale offers one of the two four-year Council for Interior Design Education accredited Bachelor of Science Degrees in Interior Design in Illinois. It is a dynamic four-year degree in which students planning to work in residential, commercial or contract interior design take part in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach. The program, with an architectural bent, emphasizes comprehensive technical skills as a foundation for creative problem. It focuses on core studios classes for the design process as well as a host of other subjects, including programming, marketing, schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction management, project occupancy, and post-occupancy evaluation. Complementary courses are offered as well, such as instruction in presentation, interior design history, lighting, HVAC systems, furniture, materials and finishes, plumbing, acoustics, and current professional topics and practice. Career opportunities include: positions in design or space planning firms, in architectural or engineering firms as the interior designer or interior design team member; or as a facilities planning consultant, either independently or in a company. With two years' work experience, graduates can sit for the board examination and become licensed designers.
