University of Northern Iowa

The mission of the Interior Design department at the University of Northern Iowa is to provide an up-to-date, diverse, quality learning environment in which students are trained to become ethical, responsible critical thinkers and efficient problem solvers in the fields of residential and commercial design. A balance of both practical and theoretical aspects of interior design, complemented by liberal arts and business courses, gives students a unique approach to understanding residential and commercial design. The curriculum focuses on problem-solving in studio classes, with special attention paid to designing for diverse populations, special needs and environmental concerns. Students become proficient in the latest technology and computer software, and all students complete a supervised professional internship before graduating. Critiques-from peers, professors and outside evaluators-play an important role in the development of the designer, and students benefit from a low teacher-to-student ratio, faculty members that represent a range of professional specializations, and access to excellent facilities such as computer labs, and drafting, cutting and duplicating equipment. Students can take advantage of professional development opportunities by joining departmental organizations such as: Phi Upsilon Omicron National Honor Society, Northern Iowa Family Services Organization (NIFSO), Student Interior Designers of Northern Iowa (SIDNI), and Textile and Apparel Association (TAPP).
