University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

At the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, students interested in design have the opportunity to explore many facets of this exciting world: graphic design, apparel design, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and interior design. The interior design program, with its professional focus, stresses design as a vehicle for improving quality of life and promoting health and safety. In this CIDA-accredited program, students build a strong foundation with coursework in fundamentals, process, theory, research, communication, and technology, and therefore gain the ability to identify and solve problems related to human beings and their interaction with interior environments. Students learn to analyze behavior and pinpoint the needs of the project and the client. This ability to analyze project needs, combined with knowledge of historical and contemporary design theories and technical know-how, informs their approach to solving design problems, and they gain practice by designing for hospitals, schools, offices, restaurants, hotels, entertainment facilities, and residences. Communication skills, business management skills and professional ethics are also an important part of the program.
