Portland Community College
Portland Community College is unique in that it offers the only two-year interior design program in Oregon and Southern Washington. Its interior design program trains students to solve interior design problems creatively and in the parameters of the spatial needs and functional requirements of a given project. The focus at PCC is on laying a foundation of technical and creative skills that, in two years' time, will enable students to work in entry-level positions in the design industry or further their studies at Marylhurst University or the Art Institute of Portland, where four-year degrees are offered. Specializations offered include: Associate of Applied Science Degree in Interior Design; Kitchen and Bath Certificate (pending State approval); Interior Design Certificate; and Sustainable Building Certificate (pending State approval). Students are sought after because they have strong problem solving skills, excellent communications skills, and understand architectural and art history. The ample curriculum offers myriad choices, such as architectural drawing, graphic communication, lighting design, history of architecture and furniture, and study of professional practices. Real-world experience is attained through an internship.
