Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Interior Design is highly selective in admission. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation, it offers a wide-ranging university education with a professional emphasis. Within the context of design theory and the history of interior environments, students study form, space, color, and light along with of building codes, finishes, materials, construction methods and business practices to understand the built environment. Students are encouraged to be practical investigators and critical thinkers. Graduates of the program have the knowledge and skills that open the doors of successful design firms or further study. Students must first complete the Art Foundation Program. A rigorous portfolio review is the second step for admission.
