University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a four-year professional-focused undergraduate major in interior design that is accredited by the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER). Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Environment, Textiles and Design. The focus of the program is the relationship between art, design, and the interaction of people with their surroundings. Within an emphasis on process and communications, students learn to utilize their creativity and build skills when designing residential and commercial interior through courses such as history of interiors, art history, business, engineering, sketching, rendering, computer-aided drafting and design, and three-dimensional modeling. Students become proficient designers who understand how function, aesthetics, and materials can affect productivity and well-being. The internship experience allows students to gain a real-world perspective on the field, and a final portfolio demonstrates the skills and knowledge a student has acquired over the course of his or her study. Studio spaces, a resource center, a lighting demo area, and computer labs are available.
