Become a Commercial Interior Designer

An interior designer skillfully creates attractive and functional spaces. A commercial interior designer provides this service for various buildings and businesses including schools, hospitals, restaurants, and hotels. This is known as commercial interior design.  A commercial interior designer considers how things look and how the room works. For example, a designer might utilize special lighting or storage solutions depending on the business and its building's needs.

What exactly does being a fashion designer entail?

Working with a Commercial Interior Designer

Commercial interior designers begin the design process by meeting with clients to determine their specific needs. They use special computer software to create detailed plans based on the client's needs and submit them for their approval. It is important for a commercial interior designer to make sure that the design is attractive, practical, and follows all requirements of build standards.

A commercial interior designer needs a talent for design. They should be able to help clients choose the right color, arrangement, and complementary design elements. This requires having a firm grasp of spatial awareness. The designer should make sure that the décor is scaled to complement the size of the furnishings.

Designers also need to have good communication skills. They need to communicate effectively with the client, construction workers, and design crew to make sure they get the desired results.

Interior Designers Working with Architects

Architects are in charge of creating a building's structure.  A commercial interior designer is in charge of the interior, but years ago the architect handled interior design. Twentieth century architects like Frank Lloyd Wright would put just as much effort into a building's interior as he did creating the exterior.

Today many architects recognize the specialized skill-set commercial interior designers bring to the table. An interior designer and architect should be able to work seamlessly to combine the overall building with the interior design. Each craft has unique challenges concerning the client's taste, demands, and practicality. Both architects and interior designers need to anticipate how the client will use the building and rooms within.

Licensing and Certification

Many states in the United States require interior designers to be licensed. Designers obtain licensing from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification by passing an exam.  In order to take the exam, designers need at least six years of education and actual design experience. Two years of design school education must be obtained through an accredited college or graduate course program.

If a designer plans to work in a state that does not require designers to have a license, it is still a good idea to take the exam since it acts as certification that a designer is a trained professional.

The commercial interior design industry continues to grow as the demand for their services increases. Many commercial designers could find success from the increase in care facilities for the elderly. The result has been an increasing demand for design services.
