Interior Design Schools

There are two predominate types of interior design schools available for students. These schools teach students about interior design as well as information relating to different specialties or concentrations. Students typically attend a four-year program and then continue their education with a two-year graduate program.

Colleges and universities offer four year programs and give students the option to choose a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree. The science specialty is best for those students who want hands on experience working in the studio. They spend the majority of their time focusing on work in a studio setting where they actually create projects. The Arts degree is typically chosen by students who plan to attend graduate school. While they'll still spend some time in the studio, they spend most of their time learning concepts and ideas in the studio.

Students also have the option of going on to complete an advanced degree in graduate school. Those who devote their time completely to graduate school can finish the program in two years, but it can take up to four years or five years for other students. During graduate school students focus their time in a studio setting where they work on different design projects and applying their knowledge to create their own ideas and projects.

There are also some two year programs that students use before attending a four year college. The two year program is often in interior decorating, which is a separate discipline. Students learn basic ideas and concepts that they can apply to their four year program. Since community colleges are typically less expensive, this option is best for those who want to save money while attending school. Later, the classes they took and credits they earn transfer to the four year college they attend.

Another option in terms of interior design schools are online programs. These programs teach students the same things they would learn while attending a regular college, but have the chance to learn from their own home or office. All of the coursework is done online, including reading assignments and classroom discussions.

In the same vein of online interior design schools are distance learning options. This was the choice for many students before the widespread use of the Internet. Assignments are sent directly to the student's home and completed as per the requirements of the class. This is sometimes done in combination with online learning, but some schools still offer Internet-free options for students.

There are a few big advantages to taking classes in this manner. Online and distance learning programs are often much less expensive than a traditional four year college. It's also beneficial for those with a busy home life and those students that need to work full time. Students who find themselves doing better when learning independently will also find these classes a better option than a traditional college or university.

These interior design schools prepare students for a future as a professional or advanced student. They learn a variety of skills and types of information that interior designers use every day and they have the chance to focus their attention on this specialty. There are a large number of schools across the country now offering coursework in interior design.
