Johns Hopkins University opened in February 22, 1876, with the installation of Daniel Coit Gilman, as its first President. During his installation address, Gilman asked, "What are we aiming at?" The backing of new investigations and the advancement of individual scholars, who through their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue, and the society of which they are a part."
Mission
The mission of The Johns Hopkins University is to educate its students and cultivate their capacity for life-long learning, to foster independent and original research, and to bring the benefits of their discovery to the world at large. Gilman was free to create something entirely new for the American public in building his institution from the scratch rather than simply taking over one already in existence.
