Heartening employment trends for freelance graphic designers

The growing number of job websites for freelance graphic and web designers indicates a positive trend in demand for their services.
Often, such websites are run by groups of other graphic designers who respond to the need by artists as well as their prospective clients to pool information about availability of paying freelance opportunities.
Brian Scott, who runs one such website, reckons that freelance graphic design job growth is second only to freelance writing, and that the recession does not seem to have impacted that trend. On the contrary, he sees opportunities in the fact that many companies need to downsize and will therefore outsource projects.
His company estimates that full-time self-employed freelance graphic designers make up about 25 percent of the entire graphic design industry, but an even larger percentage includes "hobbyists" and those recently laid off who freelance as graphic designers in their spare time to earn extra income.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that graphic design jobs will grow by 10 percent over the next several years. But, according to Scott, online freelance jobs for graphic designers will grow by a much larger percentage thanks to producers of new technologies - including video games, mobile applications, cell phones, and online interactive media - vying for graphic design talent.
