A newly launched project aims to make four major U.S. cities leaders in energy efficient building construction.

The Sustainable Cities Design Academy has a team of 12 experts who will provide advice and guidance to local governments and businesses in Boston, New Bedford, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. in the area of architectural design to promote green strategies and limit buildings'' environmental impact.

Some of the specific construction projects will include new residential and community spaces on land reclaimed from Boston''s "Big Dig" project and a mixed-use transit-oriented development around the historically underserved Minnesota Avenue Metro Station in Washington, D.C.

"Sustainable Cities Design Academy provides civic leaders with the tools and resources they need to help shape more sustainable, responsible and livable communities," says Ronald E. Bogle, president and CEO of the American Architectural Foundation, a co-sponsor of the project.

According to the foundation, buildings are responsible for 40 percent of the world''s greenhouse gases.

The American Architectural Foundation has teamed up with United Technologies Corp. to underwrite the cost of participation in the project. The sponsors hope that more cities will follow.
