A prestigious nature and exploration magazine has announced the list of winners of its photographic contest for kids.
Submissions for the contest sponsored by National Geographic Kids came from around the world, and the award winning photos reflect the competition''s international character.
The grand prize went to Simon van Lierde, 12, from the Netherlands while Muhammad Humza Kafeel, 9, was the only Canadian winner.
His picture of a baby giraffe huddling with other giraffes in the rain was taken last summer during a family trip to the African Lion Safari in Cambridge, Ontario, according to the Mississauga News, and earned him the first prize in the "Animals" category.
In addition to a photo entry, the contestants were asked to write an essay about how they actively explore their world and the most exciting or inspiring things they have found in it.
Humza''s prize consisted of an autographed book from award-winning National Geographic photographer, Annie Griffith Belt, and a Nikon camera.
The contest was sponsored by the National Geographic Society and the winning photos will be featured in the May issue of the National Geographic Kids magazine.
