This year marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Berliners are celebrating it with an international event presenting the city''s top fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and artists.
The first leg of the world tour themed "be Berlin" runs from March 31 through April 2 in the Big Apple under the banner of 20 Years of Change: Berlin Days in New York City.
It celebrates the freedom, change and creativity that has allowed the German capital to transform itself into a culturally vibrant place in the last two decades.
The highlight of the New York celebration will be the Bricks to Berlin event during which massive styrofoam "bricks" will be signed and decorated with messages of hope, unity and freedom by New York artists, well-known personalities and the general public.
More than 1,000 of those "bricks" with messages from around the world will be assembled at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to recreate the historic Wall. On November 9, 2009, they will be symbolically torn down to commemorate the world-changing event.
The "be Berlin" campaign will also include industry events highlighting Berlin''s fashion, film and art and design.
Subsequent stops will include Istanbul and Copenhagen.
