The U.S. Department of Education has gifted the architecture department of Woodbury University with two grants totaling $3.4 million to be dispersed over the next five years.

The larger of these two grants, the $2.8 million Promoting Post-baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans, will allow the department to create one and three-year masters programs, grant them access to the latest technological classroom materials, and financial assistance to deserving students.

The Title V program that administers the grant was created to increase, enhance and improve the stability of institutions educating a significant number of Hispanic students – which is what drew them to Woodbury.

The Burbank College boasts a 40 percent Latino student body, and what a press release calls "an exemplary record of educating Hispanic and low-income students."

Woodbury received an additional $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist the Arid Lands institute in their research in combating the water problems in the western U.S.

"Through this grant, the pathway to a promising future for these students will be made just a little easier," says university president, Kenneth R. Nielsen.
