Mary Lou Kalmus, proprietor of La Grange-based interior design company, Designing Edge, has won an honorable mention in the sixth annual Celebration of Design gala.

The awards, presented by the American society of Interior Designers and i4design magazine, recognize excellence in the fields of residential, contract and product design in categories ranging from kitchens and bathrooms to green designs and historic restorations.

Kalmus'' winning design came in the kitchen under 200 square-feet category - perhaps a bit of a comfort zone, as her business mainly focuses on bathrooms, nurseries and commercial properties on the outskirts of Chicago.

The small kitchen proved a challenge as the property contained fixed power outlets and fixtures which could not be moved, the client – a culinary student – required a kitchen that was not only workable but professional as well, and the scope of the project commanded a relatively modest price tag.

"You have to be more creative when there''s a smaller budget," Kalmus tells the Sun-Times news. "It might be with the layout or stain and tone of the wood, light fixtures, carpet or tile. There''s a tremendous number of decisions to make."
