Karen Leslie Carmichael spent years as a professional dancer and acrobat in the entertainment Mecca that is the Las Vegas strip, but the now-retired performer has found a new way to share her talents with the world - with award winning jewelry.
At the 47th annual Art in the Park festival in Boulder city - a two-day festival that showcased the work of about 300 artists in an effort to raise funds for the Boulder City Hospital - Carmichael walked away with the best in Show award for her luminous designs, proving that her art form has progressed beyond a simple hobby.
"As a professional performer, I always aspired to excellence so it''s important my jewelry be quality," the emergent artisan tells the Las Vegas Sun. "I feel like the award has reinforced that."
Among her other creations, Carmichael believes the Tahitian Queen, an elaborately wreathed necklace that was once a finalist in the Bead Dreams International Jewelry Design competition, was the piece that caught the judge''s eye.
Those seeking a future in jewelry design can find training from industry experts at many specialized trade schools across the country.
