As anyone who has gone shopping for an engagement ring can tell you, jewelry can sometimes be immensely complicated – but southern California designer, Philippa Roberts tries to keep her pieces simple and clean.

A graduate of Miami University in Ohio where she majored in metal design and photography, Roberts takes inspiration from daily walks along the coast with her family - reflected in her frequent use of blue stones and natural shapes in her designs.

"I want jewelry to be uncomplicated and easy to wear," she tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel. She describes her motivation when designing is "a woman''s need for simple, clean, classic jewelry."

The South African-born designer opened her first studio in the basement of her Oakland home in 1996, having since expanded her operation to a workshop in the San Francisco area and gaining distribution across the country.

Roberts recently held a trunk showing of her work in a Santa Cruz gallery, where she showcased her latest collections and answered questions from store patrons.
