When perusing critic''s lists of the top movies of 2009 a common trend seems to form - 3D animation is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Accordingly, this year''s collection of nominees for the best animated feature Oscar was forced to expand to accommodate the glut of expertly crafted 3D animated films this past year.
For the past several years, the animation category of the academy awards only allowed for three nominees, yet with an ample amount of quality work being submitted for Oscar consideration in 2009, this year will see five movies vie for the prestigious award.
This year also a bumper crop of 3D animated films up for the gold statuette including Disney''s UP and A Christmas Carol, Osamu Tezuka''s Astro Boy and Dreamworks'' Monsters Versus Aliens.
The number of quality applicants for the award hasn''t been this high since 2002, when 17 films qualified for consideration with the grand prize going to Hayao Miyazake''s modern fairy tale Spirited Away.
This year more than 20 films have qualified for award consideration.
