Budding artists may be able to launch their careers at a young age through a design contest that is being held by Pier 1 Imports and UNICEF.

The home furnishings retailer and children''s charity have opened the entry process for their annual Greeting Card Contest, which allows students under 14 years of age to submit an original design for a holiday card.

Entrants to this year''s contest have been asked to model their designs after the theme Joy to the World. Winners will be selected based on their creative interpretation of this phrase and the artistic quality of their submissions.

The first-place designer will receive a $5,000 scholarship and $500 to put toward art supplies for their school. This awardee will also have their entry published on a greeting card that will be sold in Pier 1 stores across the country during the 2010 holiday season.

The People''s Choice winner, which will be selected through a public vote on the company''s website, will receive $500 worth of art supplies.

Eligible students can begin submitting their designs on February 1 and March 5 is the application deadline.
