Discover Card has announced the winners of its student card design contest, which awarded cash prizes for original artwork.
Competitors were challenged to create an original design for a Discover credit card using a Facebook application, which allowed them draw on a graphic overlay. The winners were determined by visitors and fans, who were able to vote for their favorite designs on the Discover Facebook site.
Approximately 6,700 entries were submitted, and more than 200,000 votes were cast through the contest, which was launched in December.
The grand prize winner created a card that resembled a cassette tape and received a $1,000 award for the submission. The design will be featured on the company's new student card, which will be unveiled in April.
Additional prizes of $500 and $250 were given to students who created dollar bill- and space-themed designs. Runners-up received $50 Discover gift cards.
Anas Osman, vice president of acquisition at Discover, said the contest was intended to allow "Discover fans and visitors to share in the creation of a new student card design in an easy, fun and interactive way."
