New speculations from a video game veteran have players intrigued and hardware engineers concerned.

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Medal Gear Solid series, claimed that the future of video games will free players from the restraints of a console-based system, Reuters reports.

The gaming guru's made his prediction at press conference, where he was announcing the release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the latest installment of the series. The game will be released at the end of the month in Japan, and in June in Europe and the U.S.

"Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel -- wherever they are and whenever they want to play," he told his audience.

Caught offguard, executives from Sony, which distributes the Metal Gear Solid games for Playstation, told the news source that they hope Kojima will continue to develop games for platforms but respect his right to speculate the future of the industry.

In the meantime, retailers such as Game Stop are capitalizing on the release of Peace Walker by making it available in a Big Boss pack, which includes the game, codes, a voucher for a free Playstation movie download, a memory stick and a camouflage carrying case, according to Destructoid.com.
