Even though some of the most renowned artists have passed on, their work remains popular among collectors around the world. Recently, Vincent van Gogh's "Almond Tree in Blossom" piece was named the most popular oil painting of 2010. It reached the top of overstockArt.com list, beating out other works by artists, including Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso.
In 2009, overstockArt.com determined that van Gogh's "Starry Night" was not only the most popular oil painting of the year, but of the decade. Out of the top 10 list of 2010, a total of four pieces were created by van Gogh: "Starry Night," "Almond Tree in Blossom," "Cafe Terrace at Night," and "Sunflowers."
"We saw an almost instantaneous increase in sales of the painting when the different interpretations were introduced, particularly with the red interpretation, which was an immediate best-seller," said David Sasso, CEO of overstockArt.com.
More than 600,000 art enthusiasts visit the website every month. Pieces by Mark Rothko and Gustav Klimt also made the 2010 top 10 list of oil paintings.
Employment of artists is predicted to increase by 12 percent over the next eight years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
