Last November, New York University professor Wafaa Bilal implanted a camera into the back of his head for a year-long project, dedicated to snapping shots of his every move. Despite the opposition Bilal received from other professors and administrators, he failed to consider the rejection he could face from his own body. Now, Bilal has removed a portion of the camera for the sake of his health.
A museum in Qatar commissioned the professor to surgically implant the 10-megapixel camera into his skull. It has been taking pictures every minute from the perspective of Bilal, all of which were streamed online.
The professor is moving on with the project by currently strapping the camera onto the back of his skull. His goal to get viewers to focus on the present as life speeds by.
"Most of the time, we don't live in the places we live in," Bilal told The Chronicle of Higher Education. "We don't exist in the city we exist in. Perhaps physically we exist, but mentally we are somewhere else."
Bilal's project may encourage art enthusiasts and amateur photographers to begin viewing the industry in a new way.
Many people enter self-employment as photographers for the schedule flexibility, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
