This year's National Design Awards list of recipients and finalists was recently released. The director of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt and National Design Museum, Bill Moggridge, announced the names of the finalists for their excellence in every aspect of design including architecture, interior and fashion.

"The work of this year's National Design Awards winners represents extraordinary solutions to the design problems central to the landscape of daily life, from how we dress, shape our personal and private spaces, frame communication and interact with the world at large," said Moggridge.

The 12th annual award ceremony recognized Matthew Carter with the Lifetime Achievement award for his work in web design including creating typefaces for more than 50 years. The Design Mind award was given to Steven Heller for his graphic design work over the years.

These awards were established to recognize innovative ideas in the field. It also incorporates education workshops for young students in design programs to see how the work has developed over the years, and they may be the future recipients of these honors.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, prospective graphic designers can expect the amount of job opportunities to increase by 13 percent between 2008 and 2018.
