Florida college gets LEED certification

The new and improved third floor of building L on the Seminole State's Sanford/Lake Mary Campus in Florida is finished and also received a green stamp of approval, according to the university's website.

The building was originally built in the 1970s, but after its renovation of the third floor, this old facility will receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

"This building will show students it's possible to renovate a 40-year-old building and incorporate today’s technologies to make it energy efficient and create a healthier environment," Cheryl Knodel, program manager, told the news source.

Some of the new eco-friendly features include a highly reflective solar roof to lessen air conditioning energy, highly insulted walls, all of the products are wood-based, low flow in the bathroom faucets to use less water, daylight sensors dim lights and more than 85 percent of the construction waste was recycled instead of going to the local landfill, the media outlet reports.

Individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in architecture design after they graduate from their design programs may be able to land a job. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for professionals in this field is expected to increase by 16 percent between 2008 and 2018.
