NewSchool of Architecture & Design was founded in 1980 by Richard Welsh. The school was originally located in Chula Vista, California before relocating to San Diego. NewSchool of Architecture & Design is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools to award associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees. Each program at the school is also accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

__REQUEST_INFOTo maintain program standards the school is governed by an institutional advisory board comprised of professionals within the design community who advise school officials on employment trends, market conditions, design best practices, and curriculum opportunities. The advisory board is comprised of 16 individuals.
NewSchool offers a total of ten degrees all related to architecture and design. They are a mix of bachelor's and master's degrees. New degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, a Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Arts, and a Master of Landscape Architecture. All NewSchool of Architecture and Design degrees integrate theoretical and technical competencies. Classes are designed in a lecture/lab format where students listen to a lecture by their professor then engage in practical learning applications in the laboratory.
The bachelor's degrees include technical core courses as well as a general education component. The master's degrees do not include a general education component. The majority of students work within the design and architecture community before graduating by participating in externships.
Student services are also offered to every student of NewSchool of Architecture & Design. The career services department offers potential graduates with resume and interview preparation, job access through local and national design firms, networking opportunities, and job fairs. There is also a student organization called the American Institute of Architecture Students. All NewSchool students have the option to join the organization. The group often takes field trips, has guest lecturers, and social events. Officers are elected every spring quarter.
