The Photography Department has a proud and highly respected history for teaching the artistic practice of this medium. In today's times it operates as a fulcrum, utilizing import with a spirit of inquiry into the future.
The creative and flexible education and practices in photography at SFAI are supported by a distinguished faculty who are not only recognized as influential figures in their field but represent all sides of contemporary aesthetics.
The San Francisco Bay Area offers a wide variety of museums, galleries, and other exhibition locations. There are large museums, private galleries, and a host of other exhibition spaces in the San Francisco Bay Area. Some of the world's largest photography collections can be viewed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and UC Bancroft Library.
Another photography gallery that should be recognized is the SF Camerawork. The Bay Area has many other galleries that show only photo-based art.
