University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The Photography program is dedicated to training exceptional artists who will possess a global view of the arts and to serve as cultural leaders of the modern world. This course will broaden the student's own creative abilities and question his ideas and assumptions of the world around him.

For the Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography the curriculum requires 122 credit hours to encourage the study of photographic media for personal expression, to explore the social implications of pictures, and to develop the skills needed for careers in photography. General art requirements and electives can give a wide foundation in the visual arts. Photography courses will offer to students a strong background in the history, theory, and practice of photography as an art form.

A portfolio of the student's work must be submitted before graduation. Students must provide their own 35mm or 120mm roll film camera, film, and paper.

The photography department's graduate program is a three-year program that emphasizes importance on aesthetic and personal development. Materials are used to discuss the history of photography and the views of critics, along with its importance within our culture. We encourage technical ability and versatility amongst our students, as is an open-minded approach toward the swift changes taking place in image-making technology.
