Maryland Institute College of Art

Over 100 years ago, MICA had one of the first formal photographic programs in the world. Then and now, we realize photography is a fine art. Today, the curriculum covers all areas of still and digital photography, and offers students a background in the technical applications, as well as in the history and contemporary directions of this medium. All photography majors are required to complete at least one photo related internship, because we believe strongly in the value of professional development.

By visiting artists, students connect with many of the most important photographers working today's competitive market. Such recent artists include: Willie Doherty, audiovisual installation artist; Robert and Shana Parke Harrison, and collaborative surrealist photographers; Emmet Gowin, photography faculty, Princeton University.

MICA alumni can be found working as photographers for commercial illustration, studios, medical, architectural, nature, magazine, and newspaper photography. Alumni are also scattered about as museum curators, digital photographers, teachers, and fine artists. To finance a personal photographic project in the United States or abroad after graduation, the senior photography majors are eligible to apply for a $4,000 Meyer Photography Traveling Scholarship.
