Massachusetts College of Art
We emphasize that students acquire critical ability and inculcate for this purpose personal vision and experimentation while acquainting them with the history of photography and related critical works. Students are prepared for a photographic arts career and are introduced to a large variety of the required tools. We are not a traditional college, in that we encourage new ideas as well as the traditional ideas to develop new techniques.
Technically speaking, this program gives a solid foundation. We teach fine black-and-white printing, palladium and alternative printmaking, working with toning, view camera, Polaroid, as well as making multiple images and collages. The students can apply these skills in commercial environments.
Our cross-concentration classes like that taught collaboratively by Laura McPhee and the professor of sculpture Judy Haberl, urge students to push the boundaries of photography. The photo-incorporated object is like an "Object-Image", which is a cross between sculptors and photographers.
Since we are located in Boston, it is possible for students to attend a wide array of exhibitions of contemporary and historical photography and to visit artists and curators who work in the area. We encourage that all students do so.
